Learning Through Play

At Preschool our emphasis is learning through play. Children have access to many age-appropriate toys and real, authentic resources which promote curiosity, awe, and wonder.

💧

Water Play

Exploring volume, pouring, and scientific concepts through water activities.

🎨

Creative Arts

Painting, drawing, and crafts to express imagination and develop fine motor skills.

🏗️

Construction

Building with blocks and materials to develop spatial awareness and problem-solving.

🌱

Outdoor Learning

Growing fruit and vegetables, mud kitchen, bikes, scooters, and large equipment.

🧩

Small World

Imaginative play with figures, vehicles, and scenes to develop storytelling skills.

🍪

Playdough

Squeezing, rolling, and creating to strengthen hand muscles and creativity.

In the Moment Planning

We follow "planning in the moment" which enables staff to meet children's individual needs straight away by following their current interests. More adult-led activities may be planned for celebrations like Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Diwali.

Special Weekly Activities

🥾 Welly Wednesday

Every Wednesday morning, we use the wooded area within the grounds of Lilleshall Primary School. Based on 'Forest Schools' ethos, children explore the natural environment and develop a relationship with the natural world.

What to wear: Suitable clothing, wellies provided by parents. Winter: warm clothes, hats, gloves. Summer: lightweight long sleeves, long trousers.

🤸 P.E. Thursday

Every Thursday morning, Moon Group (older children moving to school) visit Lilleshall Primary School Hall for P.E. This enables children to use a larger space and equipment.

Benefits: Physical development, active play, and building independence in preparation for school.

🚶 Welly Walks

All children get the opportunity during the week to have a welly walk to our local field to see sheep and lambs, explore different weather conditions, and use the large school field.

Experiences: Monument walks, wooded areas, meeting farm animals, and community exploration.

Preparing for School

There is much more to being school ready than numbers and writing their name!

✅ Self-Care Skills

Dressing themselves, toileting independently, proper handwashing techniques

✅ Social Skills

Sharing with others, taking turns, playing cooperatively

✅ Concentration

Sitting and listening for short periods, following instructions

✅ Independence

Confidence to try new things, resilience when facing challenges

Transition Support

Children attending Lilleshall Primary School visit with staff from June onwards for weekly play sessions with the reception teacher. We also contact other local schools to arrange visits, ensuring smooth transitions for all our children.
